THE PROJECTS LEAD BY LUXEMBOURG

Toutes à l’école Luxembourg has made it their mission to support the students after their baccalaureate.

Because the sponsorship does not end with the baccalaureate, we want to continue to follow our students in their tertiary studies and give them the chance to receive a quality university education.

We give them the tools to access the profession of their dreams and the opportunity to escape poverty and integrate into society. Their willingness and desire to learn always surprises us !

Leaving for university is a big change for the students and their families and that is why Toutes à l’école is supporting them by making  the Chandara Students Home Sen Sok and the Chandara Students Home Boeung Tumpun available to them  These  two student hostels are  safe and stimulating places where they can find support and guidance, both in their studies and in their adult life.

All our students are accommodated free of charge. They can benefit from a contribution to their tuition fees ( based on their family’s financial situation and their academic results) and a monthly living allowance. They receive a personalised program for their studies and psychological support.

In 2020/2021 the Chandara Student Homes accommodated 264 students studying in 23 different universities in Phnom Penh.
69 students in their 3rd year, 106 in their second year, and 89 in their first year of studies. The success rate for moving to the next year was 96% in 2020

90% of students have work experience and over 15% regularly participate in volunteer work (within TAE or other NGOs).

LIFE AT THE HOSTEL

The Chandara Students’ Home aims to accompany our students through their studies and their journey into adulthood. To achieve this there are no cooks or cleaners: the students themselves prepare their meals and look after their hostel.

They also have a Student Council, the Bong Srey Club (Big Sister Club), which is a place for dialogue and shared management of the hostel between the students and the administration.

They have assistance and support for their studies (guidance counselors, support courses, compulsory English courses, language courses – French and Japanese, etc.) and will have assistance in their professional projects and their job search. The hostel also offers workshops focusing  on their well-being: yoga, theater, dance, sport, self-confidence.

The students are also encouraged to participate in local community service projects alongside their academic studies.

The students continue to benefit from medical and psychological check ups, as they did when they were students at Happy Chandara

A SECOND HOSTEL OPENED AT THE START OF NOVEMBER 2020

In 2020 The Chandara Students Home Sen Sokwas already almost full with around 130 students who lived and studied there.

However, they are soon to be joined at university by the future graduates of Happy Chandara: the school has a 100% success rate in the baccalaureate, compared to 66% on average in Cambodia!

To allow the third class of  graduates to start their higher studies in the best possible conditions, Toutes à l’école decided to open a second student hostel,  the Chandara Students Home Boeung Tumpun. It is located in the southern part of Phnom Penh and is closer to universities in the southern part of the city.

It is made up of 8 chinese houses each having two 14 bed bedrooms,  plus a communal kitchen, 3 computer rooms, a library, a study room and parking area for bicycles and motorcycles.

A SECOND DORMITORY

It became clear that the students came from regions increasingly distant from the Happy Chandara school and that the construction of a new dormitory for the school was necessary.

The construction, co-financed by the Luxembourg Directorate for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Action, began in December 2020 and will end in December 2021. The dormitory will be able to accommodate 120 female secondary school students, providing them with a place to live that is secure and stimulating. Toutes à l’école wanted it to be a responsible and ecological project.

The layout of the spaces has been thought out according to the orientation of the sun and the wind.

The spaces are open with for good ventilation that helps to reduce the humidity that is very present in Cambodia.

The building is clad in bamboo and plants which protect the structure from the sun and prevents heat from being released during the night. Rainwater is collected and used to supply water to showers and sinks during the rainy season, which in turn will be treated so that it can then be used in toilets and to water plants. The building will use solar energy.

Toutes à l’école continues to break the cycle of poverty and educates the mothers of tomorrow.
